DRY DRUNK

Those who spend time in the term “dry drunk.” It is an insult used against people who do not seem to have learned anything during rehab. Though they are sober, they refuse to work on issues of anger, denial, and blame. Instead of using new challenges to grow, they wallow in self-pity and remember their drinking days. Actor Drew Barrymore recalled in People magazine that when she came out of rehab at age thirteen, “I didn’t want to face that I was still as much an addict as when I first went to the hospital. Even though I had not been drinking or doing drugs, I had still been hanging around with a crowd that did.” Family and friends can help dry drunks by encouraging them to attend self-help groups. There they can find positive strategies to cope with problems.
